Additional Information

This page provides a reference glossary of the key terms used within the Pattermere system, alongside brief guidance on what to expect when you begin using the platform.

Key terms

Glossary of platform terminology

The following terms are used consistently throughout the Pattermere interface and in communications from the support team. Understanding them will help you navigate the system more effectively.

  • Category

A defined grouping of related records within the system. Each category has its own set of attributes, and all records within a category share that attribute structure. Navigating to a category displays all records assigned to it in a consistent layout.

  • Record

An individual item of information within the system, assigned to one or more categories. Each record consists of a set of attribute values that correspond to the structure of its category. Records can be viewed at summary level or in full detail.

  • Attribute

A defined field within a category that holds a specific type of information about a record. Attributes are consistent across all records in the same category, making it straightforward to compare records by looking at the same field in each one.

  • Summary view

A condensed presentation of a record that shows its most significant attributes without displaying the full detail. Summary views are useful for scanning multiple records quickly. They are indicative and may not reflect every attribute value associated with the record.

  • Detail view

The full presentation of a record, showing all attributes and their values. The detail view is used when a user needs complete information about a specific record rather than a general overview.

  • Verified record

A record that has been reviewed through the platform's standard confirmation process. Verified records are indicated as such within the interface. Verification confirms that the information held against the record has been examined and accepted; it does not certify the accuracy of underlying source data.

  • Summary description

A general description generated from available information. Summary descriptions have not been independently confirmed and should be treated as indicative rather than definitive. Where accuracy is important, users should consult the full record or contact the support team.

  • Access level

A defined permission tier that determines which categories and records a user can view within the system. Access levels are assigned by the support team following a review of the user's access request. Users may request a change to their access level at any time by submitting a new enquiry.

  • Enquiry

A message submitted to the Pattermere support team through the enquiry form on the Enquire page. Enquiries can cover any aspect of the platform, including access requests, questions about specific records, and requests for clarification. Each enquiry is reviewed individually.

  • Pattern indicator

A visual or textual marker within a condensed view that highlights a shared attribute among multiple records in the same category. Pattern indicators help users identify common characteristics across a set of records without reviewing each one in full. They are descriptive and should not be interpreted as analytical conclusions.

Getting oriented

What to expect when you begin using the platform

Your first session

When you first access the platform following confirmation from the support team, you will see the categories available at your access level. Each category is labelled with its name and a brief description. Start by browsing the top-level categories to get a sense of how the information is organised before navigating to individual records.

Navigating the hierarchy

The system uses a hierarchical structure. Broader categories sit at the top level, with more specific subcategories and records nested within them. You can move up and down the hierarchy using the navigation controls. Your current position is shown at the top of each view, making it easy to return to a previous level.

When information is unclear

If you encounter a record or category that you cannot interpret from the available information, use the enquiry link within the interface to submit a question. Include the name of the category or the record identifier in your message. The support team will respond with clarification.
